ROC Schedule 2018
Plans for the 2018 Schedule are on the Schedule page. Finalizing the schedule involves getting permission from the venue, filing for permits, renting lodges and providing insurance certificates so it can take some time. Some listings are already subject to change so don't mark your calendars yet.
This year the Rochester Map Adventure returns to the schedule and we will be introducing a four event Summer Score O Series. We will also be hosting an OUSA National Ranking Event at Letchworth West in May date TBD. This is an enhanced local meet that features seven courses and assigned start times for Orange - Blue courses. Each club is being allowed to offer one NRE without paying any additional sanctioning fees normally required. We will call this meet the Western New York Championships and hope to attract a larger, competitive field and ranking points.
The other part of our committee function is to make sure that suggested venues have updated or new maps.
This year we will need to update Seneca Park and Basil Marella Park. We will continue to map other areas of Alasa Farms and hope to do orienteering quality maps for Harriet Hollister and Cumming Nature Center.

At the end of the 30 minutes (or less) the other half of the group goes out on the other version of the map. The courses will stay on the northeast side of the ridge to enhance cell phone reception and reduce climb. Make sure your phone is well charged before you go out.
Mendon Trail Run - Saturday Nov 4
For more information about the race, go to the event web site at: http://roc.us.orienteering.org/mtr/
Alasa Farms - Sunday, Oct 15th from Noon to 2
Alasa Farms is a brand new map. A prominent water feature divides the vast open woods into two distinct sections. The green and red courses will explore both sides, while the white course will make use of the farmstead area and give a taste of the beauty of the forest. Those who are ready for a bit more forest should choose yellow. Instead of separate brown and orange courses, we will offer only orange. Those who usually enjoy brown should be able to find their way around one steep descent /climb on the orange course with reasonable planning.
Our start finish area will be at Cracker Box Palace farmstead on Shaker Rd just south of Shaker Tract Rd.

Genesee County Park - Nature Center
White 1.9 km
Yellow 2.1 km
Brown 4.1 km
Green 5.1 km
Red 6.2 km
Genesee County park is located south of Batavia about 45 minutes southwest of Rochester. This a a new map made by Dave Cady (BFLO). The terrain has some rolling hills, a stream through the center and green and fields all around. It is a people park with picnic areas, shelters, and playgrounds and an extensive network of trails. Dave Cady designed some fun courses which will challenge your ability to make quick decisions about route choice. The vegetation is thick this time of year especially the semi-open yellow and impassable dark green but the courses make good use of more open areas of the park. It should be fun for all!
Letchworth State Park - Sat-Sun, September 16-17th
ROC is hosting a National Event in Letchworth State Park, recreational White beginner and Yellow novice course will be available each day for day of registration. All other courses would have required pre-registration. Full details on Event webpage.
Mendon Ponds Park - Saturday, September 9th

Courses close at 1:30 PM
This event will have half length Event courses and half length Training courses.
Event Courses regular entry fees.
You might also use the training courses to help instruct new folks or other club members. Or even go with a partner of similar skill and take turns each leg and give each other tip and feedback. Great event to bring a friend, training courses are free for everyone so spread the word.
Durand Eastman Park - Thursday, August 24
The start is at Magnolia Shelter.
There will be a White course, which you can start any time between 6:00 and 6:45 (course closes at 7:30). The White course is on trails and fields, and offers relatively simple navigation. There is one trail that is not completely obvious - the path will be marked with streamers until it becomes more clear
There will also be a Sprint course, starting any time between 5:45 and 6:15. People who do not want to do the Score-O can start later.
The main event is a Score-O with a mass start at 6:30 pm, where the object is to score as many points as possible by visiting controls within the one-hour time limit. All controls are worth 1 point.
Since it’s starting to get dark early (and it gets darker a lot earlier in the woods than in open areas), for safety reasons, we do want everyone back on time, by 7:30 pm. To encourage everyone to be back on time, there will be a sizable penalty of 3 points per minute or fraction of a minute late. The penalty will start at 7:30, so if you’re late in starting out on the Score-O for any reason, you still need to be back by 7:30.
Durand lost quite a few large trees in the wind storm earlier this year. The newly fallen trees are not yet on the Durand map. Some of them fell across trails and have not yet been cleared off, so be careful.
Highland Park Score-O - Wed July 26th
For those of you unfamiliar with a Score-O, everyone gets a map with all controls printed on it and you chose as many or as few to visit. The catch? You have only one hour to return to home base before all your hard earned control points begin to be taken away from you - 1 control lost per each minute of overtime.
If you are a beginner, the meet director or control setters can suggest some easier controls to go for.
LOCATION (orange and white signs will direct you to the start of the event)
