Powder Mills Park - Classic (23 May 2026)

Powder Mills Park - Shady Rest Shelter

Courses Close: 12:30pm

Courses Available:

Intermediate: 9 controls, 3.2 km, 85 m of climb

Long Advanced: 19 controls, 5.0 km, 210 m of climb

String O - very short, very fast, very fun...recommended for kids of all ages.

Course Setter's Notes:

There is a 500 meter walk to the start from the shelter. It will be marked.

There is a trail running event that will be using the west side of the park at the same time as our orienteering event. The trails they are using will be clearly marked on the map. Orienteering courses are designed so they will not interfere with the trail runners, but if you find yourself near to or crossing over those trails, please yield to runners.

Swamps are very wet, due to our wet springtime weather. Visibility in the woods is good, and runnability is also very good since the swallowwort hasn't grown up yet this spring. Terrain is steep in some places, but there are often gentler ascents nearby.

String-O will be available to show off your speed!

Instruction is available at all events, just ask at the registration table. Feel free to bring friends and family.

Pre-packaged snacks, fruit and jugs of water/Gatorade will be available.

Don't forget to sign up to volunteer and pre-register.

See you in the woods!

Rochester Map Adventure 2026 (14 Jun 2026)

Rochester Map Adventure 2025

Event Location: Three Heads Brewing, 186 Atlantic Avenue, Rochester, NY
Event details page

There will be a mass start (everyone starts at the same time) at 10:30 a.m. for the 5 hour and 11:30 a.m. for the 3 hour. Maps will be handed out 30 minutes before the start, to give plenty of time to plan your strategy. Registration / check-in will open at 9:30 am.

Question/answer sheets will be given out when you register, so you can spend a little time getting familiar with the types of questions being asked prior to getting the maps.

Time categories are 3 hours and 5 hours. Individuals and teams can choose to do the event on foot or on bikes.

Entry fees are $15 for individuals, and $25 for teams of 2-4 people. (Additional $5 for day-of-event entries.) Online Entries close Noon on Saturday 6/28

The map:

The map is oriented to true north, not magnetic north. Magnetic north is indicated on the map legend, although there should not be any need for precise compass bearings.

One side of the sheet will have the center area and the eastern side of the mapped area; the other side of the sheet will have the center area and the western side of the mapped area. Thus, there is overlap between the two sides, to minimize the need for flipping from side to side. Map bags of 9x12 will be supplied.

Object:

The object is to visit, in any order, as many as possible of the spots (checkpoints) indicated by red circles on the maps, and verify that you were there by answering a question whose answer is found at the spot.
