See you in the woods!

Upcoming events

Rick and Linda have set up a streamered course at Rattlesnake Park near Dansville, NY.  This is a members only course which means you must be logged in to the website to view the event.

As an added ROC member benefit the club is making all of the Permanent and Map Hike courses available free of charge during the pandemic so that everyone can enjoy some time out in the woods. Become a member here.

Once you log in to the website, under the Members Tab you can simply download the map and head out in the woods.

The first spring training events courses are listed for results on Attackpoint. Instructions on the link to share your splits and you can compare with others and comment how you did.

Schedule shirts and Club Jerseys are available for purchase!  Links are located under the 'Volunteer' tab.

See our first event of our Solo Series. Print your map and complete a course anytime when the flags are up.

Similar events to follow into the beginning of our spring schedule. Details in planning.

Early Spring events likely to be POSTPONED and rescheduled. Stay tuned for updates and possible independent orienteering activities.

Beginner's Clinic 10am-12:30pm Saturday, April 18, 2020

Mendon Ponds Park East Lodge

Learn to orienteer! Whether you are a first timer or have tried orienteering once or twice, this session will teach you the basics of navigating an orienteering course. Map reading, pace counting, and route choices will be taught, followed by practice outdoors. After a guided map hike with an experienced orienteer you can enjoy navigating a beginner course on your own. Other topics include what you need to know to attend a local meet and how to use ROC's permanent orienteering courses.

This session is free, but pre-registration is required at this link Mendon Ponds - Orienteering Clinic

Dress for the weather and the trails! We will be both indoors and outdoors.

The club's Annual Meeting is this Sunday after Winterfest at Mendon Ponds, Hopkins Point Lodge.  Please come and hear about the state of our club and help us elect new board members.  Meeting starts at 2 pm, snacks and drinks provided.

We have snow and so far (fingers crossed) the forecast looks like that will hold for the week. Ski-O doubleheader this weekend, with Cumming Nature Center on Saturday and rescheduling Harriet Hollister for Sunday.

As well the Mendon Ponds Winterfest has been rescheduled for the following week and our Annual Meeting for the club to be held afterwards.

The CNYO Snowgaine is back and a month away! Spread the word. 2 days of orienteering in the snow. One of my favorite events. We are fortunate in Rochester to be 2 hours away. If the event seems too long for you consider doing one day (we can make a 1 day rate). Also - you don't have to go out for the full 8 hours - the basecamp is located centrally so you could return to the start/finish after a few hours and go out again.

Harriet Hollister Ski-O now is canceled due to expected poor ski conditions and low registration.

We received word that winterfest has been postponed because of the danger of high winds tomorrow. They expect to reschedule soon. https://www2.monroecounty.gov/parks-winterfest

Photo-O solution...posted at the end of the pictures.

The 2020 Photo-O is ready for you to try!  The format is different...you have to try to figure out where I am standing when I took the picture.  To give it a try log in and look for the Photo-O.  The link for a partial Durand map is included in the instructions.

Winter Orienteering opportunity at Mendon Ponds!  We put out a semi-permanent course at Mendon Ponds using red 3' by 6' tags in the woods.  Download the map and get out for some open woods winter Orienteering.

The NY ski-o calendar is up at skio.nyssranordic.org, with the first event - hopefully! - this Saturday at Mt Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid.  Updates will be posted on the NYSSRA Nordic site - always check there before traveling to an event.

At the end of the Thanksgiving Family weekend, we can join our Orienteering friends (no such thing as an Orienteering enemy!) at a FREE members-only event on Sunday December 1 at Parkview Lodge at Webster Park. The event starts with a board of directors meeting at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to attend the board meeting. Following board meeting we'll enjoy a special orienteering activity beginning at 3pm. This year's special activity will be a "Memory-O" - see below. Our pot-luck meal will start at around 4:30pm and we will conduct our club's annual meeting at that time.

For our pot-luck, bring a dish to share according to your last name (listed below)…. Unless you have a favorite you’d like to share with the world.

A-H – Appetizers and salads

I-P - Desserts

Q-Z - Main dishes

The club will supply cold and hot drinks. Please bring your own cups, place settings (to minimize waste and clean-up) as well as serving utensils for the pot luck dishes.

Please pre-register on-line at the club website so we can plan for drinks and the orienteering activity - note that you have to logged in on the website to see this event listed and register.

You can become a member at the event – or go on-line if you want to use credit - $15 for one-year individual membership / $20 for one-year full family membership / $40 for three-year individual membership / $55 for three-year family membership

Memory-O Event:

At the start there will be a partial course map for each course. After you punch start you may study the map for as long as you like, but be polite to other runners who may also want to study the same map. When you are ready, leave the map behind and go to your first control. As you visit controls for your course you will find all the information required to continue along your course. Each partial map will guide you as far as you need to go to find more of your map. You may need to memorize multiple controls, depending on your chosen course. Maps will only be found at controls, but not every control will have a map for your course. Some controls will have multiple maps - make sure you study the right one for your course.

You will not carry a map at any time on any course. You may carry a compass. You may not make written notes.

Courses will be fairly short, so it will be possible to do multiple courses in 90 minutes or so.
